Artist Statement:
The concept for "Child Soldier" is specific and universal.  It is originally a reference to child soldiers in Africa.  I think these photographs of child soldiers in Africa are very powerful.  They hold rifles and are sometimes amputees.  So, we thought about making a piece that draws from this striking imagery.  Violence is a problem all over the world.  But, we thought that this could be a powerful image that relates on a universal level.  And in turn, the final piece would be a universal piece not direct or specific to any one place or people.  It is would be a piece that refers to a universal problem, kids at war instead of kids at play.
